“Device agnostic” for those who may not have heard the term is basically the ability to access the internet platform from any device. Unlike TV which requires the TV set to gain access, landline phone which requires a telephone, mobile which requires the mobile phone, etc. the internet platform is designed to be accessible from anything. It is truly revolutionary, and also, it’s been baked into its design from the get go. Up until 2005-ish, the internet wasn’t quite ready to be truly device agnostic with all forms of content and communications. But, thanks to faster broadband and better compression technology, it’s finally possible. The only thing that’s holding it back? The devices. That’s what makes the iPhone truly revolutionary. It is the first true device capable of making device agnostic internet a reality. Yes, yes — I know all phones can more or less access the web, but the quality and functionality has been poor. And, while iPhone may not be delivering voice over IP yet it is an early example of how home phone and mobile phones can/will someday be one. Imagine if you could walk outside with your cordless from your house and stay on a call while you run around and shop. It’s all what the web has always been designed to do. The more that companies like Apple create devices that enable this, the more we’ll inch towards the future of a true device agnostic, multimedia IP platform world. That’s what really makes iPhone cool. What else is next for devices (or should be) relating the web? IP-ready TV — aka, your flat panel (not your PC) piping your favorite TV shows (not just web shorts) via the internet platform, versus broadcast TV and all kinds of other great stuff. The only thing holding it back? Us. Apple’s able to usher in the future for one reason alone: It understands it and moves.
